European and International Business Law LL.M

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM

The European and International Business Law LLM is unique in the European academic market in that it is a part-time Master’s programme, designed to be compatible with full-time employment. It is recognised as a full Master’s degree within the European Higher Education Area.

The programme lasts two semesters, with teaching taking place over seven weekends per semester (the first is in 6 September, and the last is in December). Teaching days are Fridays and Saturdays, typically from 9:00 to 17:00/18:00. Each semester provides 60 credits (equivalent to approximately 110–120 × 45-minute sessions, depending on the specific subjects), with six exams per semester. Altogether, students earn 120 ECTS credits and complete 11–12 exams throughout the programme. Progression to the second semester is conditional on the successful completion of the first semester’s exams.

Attendance in person is not mandatory. All classes can be followed via Teams or Zoom, and assignments and exams are conducted online (via Teams, Moodle, or Canvas). The only mandatory in-person attendance is for the final exam and thesis defence, which take place at the end of the programme. That said, we do encourage personal participation during the academic year as well, as it greatly enhances the learning experience and allows students to network with colleagues from other countries.

Some of the core subjects include (non-exhaustively): Introduction to International and European Business Law, EU Competition Law, Free Movement of Goods/Persons/Services/Capital, European Consumer Protection (including foreign currency loan cases), Private International Law, International Commercial Arbitration, Company Law, Law of Multinational Enterprises, Corporate Management and Finances,

The programme offers a non-compulsory bridging course titled Introduction to EU Law, which is also held online. While not part of the formal curriculum, this course is designed to refresh foundational knowledge of EU law in English and help participants improve their legal English. It is particularly helpful for those who are less confident in legal terminology, while not taking time away from more advanced studies.

Our teaching staff includes native English-speaking lecturers from institutions such as the University College Cork School of Law (Ireland), UNIDROIT (Rome), and the United States, as well as professors from Comenius University in Bratislava and the University of Sofia, ensuring a balanced representation of expertise from different parts of the EU.

The programme concludes in the last week of June  with a final exam, the only occasion that requires in-person attendance. This consists of a thesis defence and a comprehensive exam based on a 48-topic list. The thesis must be written in English, around 40 pages in length, on a topic related to the programme’s portfolio. We provide topic suggestions, and every student is assigned a supervisor who offers support on literature, structure, formatting, and content.
